About Mayor Quinton Lucas

Born and raised in Kansas City’s East Side neighborhoods, Mayor Quinton Lucas has dedicated his life to advancing the city he calls home. Since becoming Kansas City’s 55th mayor in 2019, he has championed initiatives that prioritize public safety, economic development, and modern infrastructure.

As mayor, Quinton Lucas led Kansas City’s adoption of the nationally acclaimed zero-fare transit initiative, providing free bus and rail transit citywide. He also tackled a years-long maintenance backlog, resurfacing hundreds of miles of streets and sidewalks in every neighborhood.

A strong advocate for equity, Mayor Lucas has promoted women and historically underrepresented groups to a majority of seats on city boards and commissions. Having experienced homelessness in his youth, he created Kansas City’s first Housing Trust Fund, spurring the development of hundreds of attainable housing units for families earning between $0 and $42,000 per year.

Mayor Lucas has brought global recognition to Kansas City, securing its position as one of only 11 U.S. cities hosting the 2026 Soccer World Cup. He continues to serve as a national leader on gun violence prevention and infrastructure policy through Accelerator for America.

Beyond his role as mayor, Quinton Lucas is a dedicated teacher, lawyer, and volunteer. He mentors inmates in local prisons, teaches as a member of the law faculty at the University of Kansas, and works with area schools, churches, and organizations to uplift the city.

Known affectionately as “Mayor Q,” he and his wife, Katherine, are proud parents to their two sons, Bennett and Quinton Jr.
